Note: we are always experimenting with our planes and have been trying different wing spans on the Big T. Unless specified we will ship the Big T with a 64 inch span wing with dihedral and wing tips already cut. We have found this to be an improvement in overall handling and lift has not diminished at all.

Well here it is. I know it has been a bit of a wait but this has been an ambitious project for us and has taken some patience. There are a lot of parts and pieces that had to come together before this could become a reality. But here it is. We are excited about it and hope that you will share that excitement with us. I have logged a couple of hundred flights on a number of different versions of the prototypes and I can tell you it has become a favorite.  We have test flown about 10 different electric power units with 20 or so prop and gearbox combinations on 6 to 12 cell packs of varying capacities. We think you will like the smooth power of the E-combo we have put together,  with more than enough power and a very decent run time. We have tried several glow engines and settled on the Magnum .25 for our gas combo but feel that any .15 to .40 would be acceptable with the .40 being outrageously powerful.  I also think a .30 size 4 stroke would be excellent for the plane. We have tried to make the plane as easy as possible to assemble for first timers as well as those with some experience. As far as how she flies, well lets just say very very nice. I have already taught a number of first time pilots how to handle a plane in the air with it. Landings are slow and easy and stall is gentle and straight ahead. should you happen to hit the ground a little too hard, the landing gear is designed to pop off and of course the wing will come off because of the rubber bands. The wing can also be folded for storage and transport. so here are some pictures and if you want to see how to build it, check out the instruction set on this web. A little farther down on this page you can see the two combo kits available for the Big T. Check out the article by Bernard Cawley on the AXI brushless motor towards the bottom of the page.

specs:

span - 64"

chord - 11-1/4"

length - about 45"

weight - 4 to 4.5 lbs

power - glow: .15 to .25

radio -  standard equipment for the glow version  --  smaller and lighter for the electric is best, we would recommend our micro FMA receivers and metal gear HS81 servos (which we have in stock) to save a little weight but she will fly fine on standard gear, just acts a little heavier in the air.

Gas combo

The gas combo will add $75 to the cost of the kit.

The combo includes: Magnum .25 motor, glow plug, prop and spinner, motor mount, gas tank, fuel line, fuel filter, throttle cable, and motor mount bolts,

We have been very pleased with the Magnum .25 glow engine. It is an ABC ball bearing engine and has more power than this plane needs and has proven to be very easy to start and very reliable. Most of the time I hand prop it to start - I wouldn't recommend that though (got my fingers snapped once).

BIG T Brushless power

Review of Big T with AXI motor by Bernard Cawley

Model Airplane News - FEB 2003  - page 108

Bernard Cawley spent a huge amount of time working our Big T over with the goal of finding the best electric power combination for the plane. The article in the  aforementioned MAN magazine was the culmination of hours of experimenting - which, as modelers, most of you know is half the fun. He has shared his findings on E-ZONE Mag.com as well. Reference the article for the complete review but I will share a couple of the specs and which motor he uses.

At the time of the printing the AXI line consisted of several motors of different sizes and winds. The one Bernard settled on for the Big T was the AXI 2820/10 using 10 3000mah NiMH cells spinning APC electric 12x6 prop for around 7 to 10 minute flights.

Bernard says the Big T gets off the ground in several plane lengths and is capable of very large aerobatic maneuvers including sustained knife edge. Bear in mind the Big T Bernard built has ailerons also.  I have personally seen the plane and I can attest to the clean and quiet flight that these motors are capable of.  This is a great motor for the Big T and I would recommend it as there is plenty of room up front for the external rotor.

Bernard lists the specifics of the different motor put out by AXI so look it up - it is very informative.
