This is how we solved a little problem for Kenn Yurch
To refresh your memory, My name is Kenn Yurch from Connecticut. When I received my Kit, there was no corrugated plastic parts. I ordered the .061, drilled and tapped Slickmount 2, FMA flightpack and kit all in one shot. This past weekend I fired up my new pocket P-51 and broke in the Norvel .061. After about an hour of running, I was re-tightening the mount screws and I noticed the firewall/mount seemed to wiggle a little. Well, I was very eager to fly so I didn’t consider this to be too much of a problem. At the flying field however this problem seemed to have gotten worse. I attempted one flight but the thrust line was too far off and I had no success (however no broken plane either!!). When I got home I figured that even though I applied a lot of glue and tape to the firewall (your on-line instructions were GREAT!), it must have come un-glued and all I needed to do was cut away the tape and re-glue. When I cut away the tape I noticed the entire nose was saturated with fuel!! It appears that the Slickmount leaked fuel out of the film canister and the foam absorbed it causing the glue to fail. WHAT WENT WRONG???? Should I have sealed the canister?? I did not see any instructions telling me to do so. I don’t think I can get the fuel out of the foam! Is the plane ruined? Is it possible that either the mount was machined out of spec. (it does snap in OK however you can see fuel on both sides of the sealing “ridge”) or did I perhaps get a bad canister? Please help me. I still believe the plane will fly great. What should I do??? Pease e-mail me back. I’ll call you on Tues, 7/20/99 or feel free to call me Monday eve after 7:00 EST. I’d really appreciate a call. I invested $230.00+ into this and I hope there is a fix for me.
Thanks Guys, Kenn
We replied:
Ken, when things go wrong, they
really go wrong and unfortunately they all happened to you! First of all we are
sending you a new plane. I double checked the Slickmount and we supply two
different film canisters with them now, neither one of which leaked in the least
under pressure. So a couple things might have happened: first, maybe a piece of
junk got between the sealing surfaces when you originally snapped it together,
Second, check the edge – I have seen a tiny crack in the film can and that
will empty it in a hurry. Third: it is possible to pop the film can off if you
smack the nose hard into the ground. You didn’t say how you screwed the mount
to the firewall but T-nuts work the best at holding everything tight. Another
idea that we just ran across is to use a hand staple gun to pop some staples
into the edge of the firewall through the doublers. Ken, you have the
distinction of being the first guy in Slickmount history to melt the nose out of
his plane! What an honor, Huh!? We
have a new one (Pocket P51 kit) coming, in the mean time you could do surgery on
the nose and cut the bad foam out and replace with a piece of scrap. We run a 2
degree down motor thrust. That helps it to fly level under power and off. Throw
the film canister away and get a new one, you can find
at least a dozen of them at any 1 hour photo place.
Hope that helps and sorry for the inconvenience.

Thanks for your prompt response to my dire situation.
Believe me, I will certainly spread
the word at my R/C club. I’ll try
to rebuild the nose of my current plane. I’ll
also closely inspect the film canister and seal.
I’ll let you know how I make out.
I hate to be a pain...but if you have not yet sent a new plane,
could you send a roll of black or dark blue instead of white again? Maybe I'm jinxed with the white!
Thanks again. It is great
that their are still companies out there who care!

Thanks for the Response .............. I really like the plane and it looks great. Again your care and quality stand out. Damien
